Ask The Herbalist: Brain Fog
By Chris Lewis, MH, CMT
Q. What can be done for a person with “brain fog” or a student who wants to make the most of his/her study time?
A.
1. Rosemary, peppermint, basil, and juniper essential oils (available at health food stores) are mental stimulants that many people use to help their memory and concentration. In my experience, and that of others, smelling these oils during study time and while taking a test, greatly improves recall and test performance. They can be smelled from the bottle or applied to the skin (usually on the head and face) either straight or diluted in some olive oil.
2. Herbs like ginkgo biloba, gotu kola, rosemary, peppermint, hawthorn, cayenne pepper, and ginger will increase blood circulation to the head, improving mental functioning. Melissa (Lemon Balm) is also useful for improving memory.
3. Have a couple cups of Yerba Mate’ tea. This tropical herb has been used by the natives for centuries to enhance mental and physical stamina, improve concentration, increase energy, etc. I have become quite fond of it myself and can say from my personal experience that it works. It’s caffeine-free too!
4. Massaging your scalp also increases circulation to the head.
5. Do the Foundational Cleansing and Nourishing Program to eliminate the causes of your mental “blockages.”
Complete detailed step-by-step instructions for cleaning out all the parasites, parasite eggs, disease germs, old fecal matter, the gum you swallowed when you were five, and everything else that is stuck in your colon and poisoning you right now are in my book “The Foundational Cleansing and Nourishing Program.” This wonderfully useful book also reveals how to clean stones, fat, cholesterol, and toxic buildup out of your liver and get your kidneys working like they did when you were 16!
6. Follow the Mucus-less diet as closely as possible to avoid some of the most common causes of brain fog.
7. To preserve your memory into old age, don’t consume anything that has come in contact with aluminum in any form (cans, cooking utensils, pans, pots, etc.) as it can collect in the brain and even cause Alzheimer’s Disease.
8. Never, ever get vaccinations of any kind in any form. They are poisons, many contain chemicals like mercury (lethal), lead (very toxic), formaldehyde (carcinogenic), propylene glycol (anti-freeze), etc., they have never been proven to be effective in preventing infections, and many of them cause the very diseases that they are meant to prevent besides having various mental, emotional, and physical side-effects, the least of which being memory problems and many neurological disorders. I know they say that vaccines are good for you, but in reality, by getting them, you will only be shooting yourself in the foot and making yourself sicker. For children in school, just ask the school for a “vaccination exemption form.” Your children can still go to school without being poisoned! For everyone else, if someone tells you that you have to get them, just say, “I can’t because they’re detrimental to my health.” You don’t need them to travel to most destinations either, they will still let you in. For more information on this, see Neil Z. Miller’s book Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective?
9. Use deep breathing (all the way in and out) along with your favorite relaxation techniques (TV, newspapers, and food don’t count) to rest your brain (also get plenty of sleep).
10. Smell a certain essential oil or blend of oils while you are studying and then have it out to smell during the test. This helps increase recall by linking two different senses together.
11. Brain fog and forgetfulness can sometimes be caused by an under-active thyroid gland. If this is the case for you, taking kelp can help to jump start your thyroid and get it back to normal. Please note that if you are taking any medications for your thyroid, they will become less and less necessary the longer you take the kelp and you will need to wean off of them. Many people prefer to have a doctors help to monitor them while weaning. That’s fine, and if your doctor doesn’t want to cooperate, there are plenty out there who will.
Happy Studying
